In 2016, PPNNE launched a pioneering door-to-

door project in Maine called “deep canvassing”

on the issue of abortion. Deep canvassing involves

15-20 minute conversations where canvassers

share personal stories and non-judgmentally

encourage voters to share their stories about

how an issue has impacted someone in their life.

Because deep canvassing is so effective it has

gained a great deal of attention from progressive

advocacy organizations and political scientists.

By the end of 2016, we had run 29 canvasses
in a variety of Maine communities

,

 engaged a

legion of volunteers through over 240 volunteer

shifts, knocked on 2,235 doors, and had 599

conversations with voters. We are advancing

our deep canvassing work in 2017 with the goal

of providing a demonstrated model that can be

replicated in other key states across the country.
